She Sunbathes On Venus by David Randall Curtis
A poem by David Randall Curtis, slightly amended to suit female recitation.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
SHE SUNBATHES ON VENUS
God is a woman.
Only women can achieve
mood swings of Biblical proportions.
Create mankind,
then try to destroy it,
get so jealous
a commandment is made
not to worship another
and finally promise undying love
only to damn you to Hell
if the feeling isn't mutual
- much like he endured
when my better half
was thrown out for good.
God is a woman.
Don't take it on faith.
Take it from him.
He should know
- he's the Devil.

First Day At School by Roger McGough
Переглядів 33 тис.14 років тому
A poem by Roger McGough. The school in the picture was where I spent my first day at school. FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL A millionbillionwillion miles from home Waiting for the bell to go. (To go where?) Why are they all so big, other children? So noisy? So much at home they Must have been born in uniform Lived all their lives in playgrounds Spent the years inventing games That don't let me in. Games T...
The Dead by Sylvia Plath

A poem by Sylvia Plath. THE DEAD Revolving in oval loops of solar speed, Couched in cauls of clay as in holy robes, Dead men render love and war no heed, Lulled in the ample womb of the full-tilt globe. No spiritual Caesars are these dead; They want no proud paternal kingdom come; And when at last they blunder into bed World-wrecked, they seek only oblivion. Rolled round with goodly loam and cr...
Mirror by Sylvia Plath

A poem by Sylvia Plath. MIRROR I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions. Whatever I see I swallow immediately Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike. I am not cruel, only truthful- The eye of the little god, four cornered. Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall. It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers. Faces a...

A poem by Charles Causley. R I J P I saw a jolly hunter With a jolly gun Walking in the country In the jolly sun. In the jolly meadow Sat a jolly hare. Saw the jolly hunter, Took jolly care. Hunter jolly eager - Sight of jolly prey - Forgot gun pointing Wrong jolly way. Jolly hunter, jolly-head - Over-heels gone. Jolly old safety-catch Not jolly on. Bang went the jolly gun. Invictus by William Henley

A poem by William Henley. INVICTUS Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud; Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbow'd. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the Shade, And yet the menace of the year...
Sylvia Sexton Has A Cure For Depression by David Randall Curtis

A poem by David Randall Curtis. SYLVIA SEXTON HAS A CURE FOR DEPRESSION Woke up and found myself a little older, wondering the ancient question - what am I alive for? I walked downstairs drawn to an aquarium; the palace of my pet Black Widow named Sylvia Sexton. She was a gift from a friend suffering marriage problems - and perhaps his idea of a warning. Gazing through the glass I just love Syl...
Mad Girl's Love Song by Sylvia Plath
Переглядів 9 тис.14 років тому
A poem by Sylvia Plath. MAD GIRL'S LOVE SONG I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead; I lift my lids and all is born again. (I think I made you up inside my head.) The stars go waltzing out in blue and red, And arbitrary blackness gallops in: I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane. (I think I made...
Brother And Sister by Lewis Caroll

A poem by Lewis Caroll. BROTHER AND SISTER "Sister, sister, go to bed! Go and rest your weary head." Thus the prudent brother said. "Do you want a battered hide, Or scratches to your face applied?" Thus his sister calm replied. "Sister, do not raise my wrath. Or I'd make you into mutton broth As easily as kill a moth." The sister raised her beaming eye And looked on him indignantly And sternly ...
Liverpool Make Up Sex by David Randall Curtis

This is a variation on a poem by David Randall Curtis, originally entitled 'I'm Only In It For The Make Up Sex'. LIVERPOOL MAKE UP SEX He told me, "You ruined my life." I laughed, "We just met!" Then I stuck out my tongue and slid on my belly to his side of the bed wrapping myself around him to squeeze out what he meant. "I'm sorry," he gasped. "Sometimes I just get ahead of myself."

I was lucky enough to do two tours of the wonderful one-woman play 'Shirley Valentine' by Willy Russell, author of 'Blood Brothers' and 'Educating Rita'. This performance was recorded at Bradford Theatre Royal in 1991 on a less-than-wonderful video camera from the front of the first balcony, hence the poor picture quality; the sound is not too bad though.

"NEXT!", "Greetings, "Where's meh tea?" and "Fill that in, Mr Boswell" have become regular sayings in my household. My parents showed me Bread and I became hooked. I'm now on series six or seven and I don't want to finish it I love it so much 😭

I have looked at it so long I think it is part of my heart. But it flickers. Faces and darkness separate us over and over. Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me, Searching my reaches for what she really is. Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon. I see her back, and reflect it faithfully. She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands. I am important to her. She comes and goes. Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness. In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

The terrible fish jumps out of the lake and grabs her attention, stopping her in her tracks, day after day. Its a kind of striking experience, like the reflection in a mirror - as one suddenly comes to realize what it is that is now being seen. The lovers and others, generally will not and cannot show that particular kind of actuality - not quite like what the mirror always will and does. I posted a essay about "Analysis of the poem "mirror" here for fun: answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200906011901...

So chilling to hear Sylvia herself read the poem. We often hear awful things that go one in this world (such as Sylvia's suicide), but we don't often make the connection that they are real people. People who had lives a family, and a voice.

Totally agree! Bread was a wonderful Sitcom in the 80's and is still repeated to this day on GOLD (the latest series repeat ended this week) with the episode where Mrs Boswell finds herself alone with the Boswell kids married and flown the nest. BTW are you the actress who played Martina, initially credited as "DHSS Clerk? =)
